For the very first operation, the interoperation time is the time between the release of material and its arrival at the gateway work center. In backward scheduling - with a known due date and a start date to be determined - the calculation is performed as shown in Fig.

In this case one can try to smooth the load profile by operations offset within the limits of their buffers, or by alternate processing, in order to avoid both idle times at the work centers or overloads. Short-term fluctuations are counter-balanced, if possible, by shifting single operations in time without, however, jeopardizing the whole orders's due date.
