Die Verse und Bilder, die im „Struwwelpeter“ enthalten sind, hat der Frankfurter Arzt Heinrich Hoffmann für seinen Sohn erdacht, in einem einfachen Schulheft aufgeschrieben und die Bilder dazu gezeichnet. Hoffmanns Sohn bekam das Heft als Weihnachtsgeschenk auf den Gabentisch gelegt. Das style hat sich darüber sehr gefreut, doch Freunde und Verwandte zeigten sich geradezu begeistert von den Bildepisoden. Hoffmann wurde überredet, den „Struwwelpeter“ zu veröffentlichen.

Bis heute gehört das Bilderbuch zu den erfolgreichsten Kinderbüchern aller Zeiten.

Hoffmann hatte die Bilder mit schwarzer Tinte gezeichnet. Später wurden die Bilder immer mal wieder im Stil der Zeit koloriert. Die Bilder in diesem Buch stammen aus einer alten Ausgabe. Die altdeutsche Druckschrift wurde belassen. Zur besseren Lesbarkeit wurden die Texte jedoch in unser heutiges Schriftbild übertragen und unter den Illustrationen angefügt.

Neben den Versen und Bildern, die bis heute Kinder faszinieren und Erwachsenen sehr vertraut sind, erzählt in diesem Buch Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann selbst ausführlich, wie der Struwwelpeter entstanden ist.
