The physical environment affects people’s behavior and perceptions, which not only impact attitudes but also impact productivity and loss prevention. Commercial and retail establishments have always used the physical environment to affect customer perceptions and behavior.
They feel the presence and controlling behaviors of others. Conversely, a dirty and poorly managed store engenders little pride on the part of the honest employee, which reduces territorial concern and promotes avoidance behaviors. A poorly managed and unkempt store also introduces the possibility of civil negligence. The failure of proprietors to establish reasonable measures to protect their products, employees, and customers will be used against them in determining out-of-court settlements as well as in trials.
Nearly every environmental situation or location is amenable to the application of CPTED concepts. The law enforcement agency can assist in asking the right questions and in supplying the right kind of information to help the community to make more informed decisions.
