In this drill, a coach or manager makes bad passes to the receiver. The coach should emphasize that the receiver must concentrate on catching the ball wherever it is thrown. A coach can teach players various "stunts" to use in developing their catching skills, such as catching the ball behind the back. The player stands with the ball in front of him in both hands. He throws the ball up in the air, approximately eight feet above his head, and catches the ball with both hands behind his back. When the ball is in the air, the player must position himself so that his face is under the ball with the head and eyes up and his back straight.

Number 2, the guard without the ball, takes the middle lane. Number 3 is the nearest forward to the outside lane away from the ball and should get there first, so he fills this lane, and #4 takes a trailer lane and posts up if there is no lay-up attempt. Number 5 is the safety and fills the opposite trailer lane. The sideline break is shown on the other side of the floor in Diagram 3-35 where #3 gets the rebound. The outlet pass is made to #2, who fills the right outside lane with the ball. Number 1, the other guard, fills the middle lane, while #4, the nonrebounding forward, takes the outside lane away from the ball.

Page 24 Diagram 2-9 Diagram 2-10 Diagram 2-11 If the three-on-two situation occurs and X1 does not commit to make the ball handler pick his dribble up, an easy shot will occur. The same is true if X2 does not stop the ball on the first pass. Most teams can stop penetration and the first pass, but this is where the three-on-two technique comes in. In Diagram 2-12 as X2 stops the ball handler, #3, and X1 plugs the hole, #1 should step to the ball side of the floor for a return pass from #3. This then basically becomes a two-on-one situation, #1 and #2 against X1.
