Something which the press seems never to have understood is that we have in this country a separation of powers in which different people in different roles have different responsibilities. The police clearly have a responsibility to interrogate and charge the young person; the Director of Social Services' statutory responsibility is to regard the child's welfare as paramount and to ensure their welfare. That will immediately create difficulties, conflicts and tensions because you have to say: 'Is this child's welfare best served by being left in a police cell while the police carry out investigations?

As the youngster starts to discuss their murderous act, they have to fact past loss, trauma and abuse, disclosing fears of being vulnerable, that therapy may bring about change they do not·like and above all cannot control. Burgess, Hartrnan and Hare (1990) described the use of drawing, painting and sculpture with juveniles in accessing memory of sadistic acts allowing further insights into the motivational dynamics. Since 1990 I have been fortunate to be able to work in conjunction with an art therapist (Aulich, 1994) making easier the task of enabling the young 33 people to face the most sadistic elements of their own acts and past abuse, particularly in those cases where the spoken word has become such a painful and destructive reminder of how systems have dealt with them.
