The final holes in the stretcher are drilled on its face, and they intersect the 3" (76mm) deep holes that go in from the edge. They need to be 1⁄2" (13mm) in diameter (use a Forstner or spade bit for best results, and make sure the back side of the stretcher is firmly placed against scrap wood to prevent tearout).
