In the past 12 years the recognition curve of OA has assumed a much steeper slope, as evidenced by at least a 100% increase in literature citations reviewed in this text. These were selected from a relatively greater array of relevant articles which have appeared since publication of the second edition. For example, in a recent review of all PubMed listings of ‘‘Occupational Asthma’’ (n ¼ 4691), about 35% of these (n ¼ 1285) appeared since the beginning of the new millennium.

Therefore, ‘‘specific’’ used in this context refers to any agent or exposure that is present in the workplace that directly results in OA. 2. Narrower definitions can be used to describe OA caused by sensitizing agents specific to the workplace. These definitions specifically apply to agents that are present in the workplace and exert their effects through ‘‘sensitization’’ mechanisms.
