" 31 To summarize, when we speak of moral children, we do not mean children who merely exhibit a set of moral traits or behaviors. Nor do we mean children who are merely obedient, polite, or religious. HOW CHILDREN THINK ABOUT MORAL RULES An enormous body of research makes the persuasive case that young children think about moral and social issues and relations in ways that differ qualitatively from the ways in which older children and adults think.

Some might react with anger, suppressed or expressed, while others might react with the secret rebellion of intelligent calculation, obeying only when under surveillance.
