On 18 December. British and Anzac troops left Suvla Bay. On 8 January. 1916 the last troops safely left Cape Helles and Gallipoli was left to the Turks. (Amongst these last troops were the 4th. (Blackburn) and the 5th. (Burnley) Battalions of the East Lancashire Regiment (Territorial Force), amongst whom many of the Pals had friends or relatives). The British High Command feared an attack on Egypt by the Turkish forces now released from Gallipoli. 31st Division, originally destined for France, was diverted to Egypt to be part of the Imperial Strategic Reserve defending the Suez Canal.
On 11 March, 1916, just fifty hours after leaving Marseilles, came the end of the line at Pont Remy, on the River Somme, near Abbeville. The train journey had been miserable and wearisome and when Pont Remy was reached there was a concerted sigh of relief. This lessened somewhat in the bitterly cold March wind. The Battalion, still incongruously wearing pith helmets, marched six miles to their billets of barns, outhouses and cottages in the village of Huppy, south of Pont Remy. Everyone felt good and thankful to be marching along a solid highway once again.
